In 1994 when Nottingham City Museums purchased this painting from Sikand, she said of her practice at the time: 'Most of my recent work is painting in gouache, watercolour and ink, media I find especially appealing to work with. Being water based, these materials allow for the possibilities of continuing and reworking paintings weeks after they were first started. This long gestation period (between the start and completion of a picture) is rather like the time taken by a seed to germinate. I think it lends an organic quality to the paintings.' The Hindu goddess Kali with her garland of human heads is a recurring subject in her paintings from this period, an influence that Sikand attributed to her formative years in India and exposure to Hindu mythology.
