Born in Belfast, sculptor Tim Shaw studied at Manchester Polytechnic (1984) and Falmouth School of Art (1985–89). His diverse practice spans immersive installation, robotics, film, performance, and metalwork. Major public commissions include The Rites of Dionysus (Eden Project), The Minotaur (Royal Opera House), and The Drummer (Truro City Centre). Shaw’s work often responds to war and conflict. In 2007, he received the Kenneth Armitage Fellowship, allowing him to work at Armitage’s London studio, where he developed Man on Fire and exhibited Casting a Dark Democracy—hailed by the Financial Times as "one of too few works to engage with the reality and human cost of the Iraq War." His Tank on Fire won the Threadneedle Prize in 2008. Elected to the Royal Academy in 2013, Shaw was also made a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and Falmouth University.
