Welcome on board! In 1825 the Stockton & Darlington Railway opened in North East England – a journey that changed the world forever. In 2025 Railway 200 is commemorating this anniversary in a year-long celebration of the modern railway.

The railway has often inspired artists. To celebrate this enduring connection, Art UK and its museum partners compiled a longlist of 200 artworks featuring the UK railway.

From February to April 2025, the public were asked to vote for their favourite railway artwork from this long list of 200.

Voting has closed for this round. You can now vote for your favourite artwork from the top 20, which were chosen from this round, by visiting the voting website.

Artists featured in this Curation: Augustus Leopold Egg (1816–1863), Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), Terence Tenison Cuneo (1907–1996), Eric Ravilious (1903–1942), Abraham Solomon (1823–1862), Charles William Carey (1862–1943), T. W. Price, Jacques-Emile Blanche (1861–1942), Charles Rossiter (1827–1897), Spencer Gore (1878–1914), and 123 more
