The Enlightenment was an intellectual and philosophical movement that produced new ways of thinking across Europe and North America during the eighteenth century, from roughly 1680–1820. It is often called the 'Age of Reason' and was defined by scientific discovery and rational thought, but it also coincided with Britain's colonial expansion and involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
