This is a painted panel from the nose of an aircraft. It was part of a Fairey Firefly of 1772 Naval Air Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm, which operated in the Pacific in World War II. The aircraft was flown by Chris MacLaren (pilot) and Wally Pritchard (observer), who are represented here as cartoon characters modelled on Popeye and Bluto. The cartoon was painted by a colleague, Petty Officer Fred Stamworth. The aircarft was damaged during a raid on Matsushima airfield (Japan). When it was scrapped, the panel was removed as a memento.
