This is one of many floral artworks donated by Clarice Cresswell on behalf of her aunt Beatrix Cresswell. It is unclear which member of the Cresswell family painted them, but it is very unlikely they were executed by Beatrix’s brother Richard (1815–1882). It could be Richard’s sister, Sarah (1817–1863), his wife Frances (1821–1904) or one of his daughters Christiana (1849–96), Charlotte (1855–1927) or Beatrix (1862–1940).
The text relates to the common twayblade orchid. Plants in the border include apple blossom, pansies, ivy and lily of the valley.
